About the Project

La Flor del Pueblo Art Team is seeking a talented artist and/or graphic designer with public art experience to collaborate on a decorative concrete design for the APS Grant Street Substation Project in Phoenix, Arizona. The APS Grant Street Substation Project aims to integrate public art and design that reflects the history and stories of the Grant Park Neighborhood. The selected artist will work closely with the La Flor del Pueblo Art Team and Espiritu Loci, Inc. to create a visually captivating and meaningful decorative concrete design. The selected artist should have experience in creating engaging and visually appealing public art installations that resonate with communities and be willing to translate the history and stories of the Grant Park Neighborhood into an innovative decorative concrete design.

Please note: this Request for Qualifications is specifically for the La Flor del Pueblo Decorative Concrete Design and not for the La Flor del Pueblo Mural Project. Materials: 

The design can utilize stamped colored concrete, exposed aggregate concrete or any number of other decorative architectural concrete finishes including Lithocrete, Lithomosaic, Stellacrete, Stamped Concrete, sandblasted concrete, or decorative paving. The Artist will work in collaboration with the team and concrete contractor to develop their design.

Eligibility:

  • This opportunity is open to Artists residing and working in Arizona

  • All applicants must be at least 18 years of age and have all necessary documentation and permits to work in the United States at the time of submission of qualifications 

  • If submitting as a team, a professional Artist with public art experience (represented by their portfolio of work, awards, collections, and exhibitions) must be the lead team member 

  • All members of Artist teams must reside in the United States

  • Artists who apply as part of a team may also apply as an individual artist

Who Should Apply:

La Flor del Pueblo Art Team invites artists at any stage of their career with previous public art experience to submit their qualifications for consideration.

Requirements:

  • Submissions are only accepted through the form linked below (Typeform)

  • Submit 3-5 images/videos files of sample artworks (each file no larger than 10 MB)

  • Submit 2-4 images/videos files of previous public art installations (each file no larger than 10 MB)

  • Artists must ensure high quality of images in JPG format

  • Sample Artworks should be recent within the last 5 years

  • Sample public art installations should be recent within the last 10 years

  • Only one submission per individual, artist collectives should make a single submission

  • Artist must carry insurance

  • No submission fee

There is strong interest in developing a robust roster that is inclusive of artists from a rich diversity of backgrounds and cultures and who reflect a wide range of experience, creative visions, aesthetics and approaches. Artists being considered for selection shall never be discriminated against because of race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, national origin, age, disability, veteran status, marital status, or based on an individual’s status in any group or class protected by applicable federal, state or local law.

Expectations of Selected Artists

If chosen for the project, the selected artist will be required to agree to the following terms and responsibilities:

  1. In-person Meeting with Interview Panel:

    • Participate in an interview panel as part of the selection process to showcase your qualifications and artistic vision.

  2. In-person Meeting with La Flor del Pueblo Art Team and Espiritu Loci, Inc.:

    • Attend an in-person meeting with the project team to gain a comprehensive understanding of the La Flor del Pueblo project, its objectives, and the historical significance of the Grant Park Neighborhood.

  3. Design Development and Presentation:

    • Develop three initial design options that reflect the project's themes and incorporate the history of the neighborhood. Present design options to the project team for evaluation and feedback.

  4. Refinement:

    • Refine the design based on the feedback received during the design presentation and selection process. 

  5. Collaboration:

    • Collaborate closely with the La Flor del Pueblo Art Team, Espiritu Loci, Inc and CVL consultants to design and integrate decorative concrete elements into the hardscape plan. 

    • Final construction documents will be developed by our team and our concrete installer. Artists will work with the team to advise them on translating and finalizing design. 

    • Installation will be done by a licensed concrete contractor. The selected Artist will advise our team on the installation. 

  6. Copyright Agreement:

    • Sign a copyright agreement to ensure the protection of the final design's intellectual property rights.

By agreeing to these terms and responsibilities, the selected artist demonstrates their commitment to working collaboratively, incorporating feedback, and creating a design that aligns with the vision of the La Flor del Pueblo Art Project.

Review and Selection Information

Review criteria will include, but is not limited to, the following:

    • Excellence in quality of art or design

    • Durability, safety, and practicality of completed projects

    • Ability to create artwork that is reflective of the soul and spirit of a community

    • Ability to manage projects on time and on budget
